Canada to UK With a Pet: Direct Flight or Paris and LeShuttle?

A practical comparison of direct air travel into Great Britain and a flight to Paris followed by private road transport through Folkestone.

Canadian travellers bringing a dog or cat to Great Britain often compare two routes: fly directly to an approved UK airport, or fly to Paris and continue by private vehicle through LeShuttle. Neither option is universally better. The right choice depends on the pet, airline acceptance, documents, total journey, budget and final UK address.

This guide compares the structure of each route. Confirm the actual flight and veterinary requirements before booking.

Use this table to shortlist a route, not to make the final decision. The airline, veterinarian and official authorities still need to confirm the actual itinerary.

Option one: fly directly from Canada to Great Britain

GOV.UK states that pets arriving by plane normally travel as cargo unless they use an eligible private flight or are recognised assistance animals. A direct route can reduce the ground section and avoids a separate entry into France.

The traveller must still confirm an approved carrier and route, arrange the correct Canadian export and Great Britain documents, and understand the airport's animal reception and release process.

A direct route may suit you when

  • the pet is accepted under a suitable cargo arrangement;
  • the animal's welfare needs favour less road travel;
  • the final address is close to the UK arrival airport;
  • the cargo agent, reception process and total cost are acceptable;
  • you prefer one international border system rather than EU entry followed by GB entry.

Direct does not always mean that the passenger and pet leave the airport together. Ask the airline or cargo agent where the animal is collected, who handles Customs clearance and how long the release process may take. Do not rely on an estimated release time as a guarantee.

Option two: fly to Paris and continue through LeShuttle

On the Paris route, the airline must confirm the pet to France. After the animal completes the French entry and release process, a private road vehicle can travel from CDG or Paris to Calais, through LeShuttle to Folkestone and onward to the UK destination.

This route involves two border systems. The pet needs the documents for EU entry in France and the accepted documents for later entry into Great Britain.

The Paris route may suit you when

  • the airline confirms a pet arrangement to France that fits the animal;
  • you want to reunite with the pet after the French arrival process and stay together during the road section;
  • the private vehicle and luggage space fit the journey;
  • you prefer the Calais to Folkestone vehicle crossing over a UK airport cargo arrival;
  • the final UK destination works with the additional road time.

LeShuttle states that pets remain with passengers in the vehicle during the crossing. The vehicle can then continue from Folkestone to London or another agreed address.

Cabin travel is an airline decision

Some people consider Paris because a small pet may be eligible for a cabin arrangement on a particular airline and flight to France. This is not a general promise. Cabin acceptance depends on the carrier, flight, aircraft, pet, weight, bag and current policy.

Ask the airline to confirm the animal on the exact reservation. Do not book the ground transfer on the basis of an old policy page or another traveller's experience.

Paperwork comparison

Direct to Great Britain

The Canadian veterinarian and CFIA prepare the Great Britain export documentation for the approved route. Use the CFIA Great Britain page and the current GOV.UK document guidance.

Via Paris

The pet first needs the current EU and French entry file. It then needs the accepted Great Britain documentation for the Channel entry. For most dogs, the UK tapeworm window must also be timed against entry into Great Britain.

The Paris route therefore has more document coordination. Read the Canada to UK documents via France guide.

Journey-time comparison

A direct flight has fewer route stages, but the cargo reception and release process adds time that is not shown in the passenger timetable. The Paris route adds French arrival checks, the drive to Calais, the pet check and the onward UK drive.

Do not compare only the scheduled flight duration. Compare the full period from Canadian check-in until the pet reaches the final address. Include the animal's tolerance for the carrier, time in the air, release method, rest stops and road travel.

EuroPaw does not publish a guaranteed CDG to London duration because flight release, traffic, border checks, crossing availability and the final postcode vary.

Cost comparison

For a direct route, request the complete cargo, handling, reception, clearance and delivery cost. For the Paris route, total the passenger flight, airline pet fee, certificate costs, any French handling, private road transport and LeShuttle ticket.

One route may be cheaper for a small pet and a London destination but more expensive for a large carrier, multiple animals or a northern UK address. Obtain current written quotes rather than relying on a generic online estimate.

Folkestone or London after Paris

Folkestone is the first UK area after LeShuttle. A CDG to Folkestone transfer can suit travellers who are meeting family in Kent or making another confirmed onward arrangement.

For London, a CDG to London pet taxi keeps the passenger, pet and luggage in the same vehicle after the crossing. For other destinations, ask for a route-specific quote.

Decision checklist

Before choosing, compare:

  • confirmed airline acceptance for the exact pet and flight;
  • cabin, hold or cargo arrangement;
  • carrier size and animal welfare advice;
  • veterinary documents and endorsement timing;
  • arrival and release process;
  • dog tapeworm timing where relevant;
  • total door-to-door time;
  • all-in current cost;
  • final UK address;
  • flexibility if the flight is delayed.

If one answer is still uncertain, do not pay for the rigid parts of the itinerary yet.

Frequently asked questions

Can an ordinary pet fly in the cabin directly into the UK?

GOV.UK states that pets arriving by plane normally travel as cargo unless they are recognised assistance animals or use an eligible private flight. Confirm the exact route with the airline and the approved carrier list.

Which route has fewer border steps?

A direct approved flight into Great Britain avoids the separate EU entry in France. The Paris route requires French entry first and Great Britain entry later at the Channel crossing.

Is the Paris route easier?

It can give the passenger a preferred flight arrangement and allows the pet to remain with the passenger during the private road section. It also adds French entry, a second GB border stage and more ground travel. Whether it is easier depends on the complete itinerary.

Can I take my pet from Paris to London on Eurostar?

Eurostar does not accept ordinary pets on its London services. Guide and assistance animals use a separate process. EuroPaw travels by private vehicle through the approved LeShuttle route.

Does EuroPaw provide a direct airport cargo service in Canada?

No. EuroPaw provides the European road section after the passenger and pet arrive in France. It does not arrange Canadian pickup, transatlantic cargo or veterinary certificates.

Can the Paris route finish in Folkestone instead of London?

Yes, subject to availability and a confirmed drop-off. Folkestone is close to the LeShuttle terminal and can be used as the final destination when the traveller has another arrangement from Kent.

Choose the route before locking in non-refundable bookings

If Paris fits the pet and the confirmed airline arrangement, read the Canada to UK via Paris CDG guide. Send the flight, pet, carrier, luggage and destination details through our contact page so we can check the road section before you commit to it.
